Description
What is Surface Roughness Comparators
Surface roughness comparators are used within industry to measure or verify the as-manufactured surface finish (roughness) of a part or assembly. Comparators are selected and used based on the manufacturing process used to create a particular surface finish. Industries standard manufacturing specific roughness comparator are available for the following process:
- Casting
- Conventional machining
- Surface Turned
- Shot Blast and Grit Blast
Typical of surface roughness comparators:
TQC Sheen Steel Surface Roughness Comparators.
TQC Comparison standard according to ISO 8503 part 1 made of quality steel. Indicates the surface condition of blasted steel according to ISO 8503 in grades of fine, medium, and coarse. Can be used in accordance with ASTM D4417 Method A, ISO 8503-1, ISO 8503-2. Comparison standard according to ISO 8503 part 1 made of quality steel. Indicates the surface condition of blasted steel according to ISO 8503 in grades of fine, medium, and coarse. The Surface Roughness Comparator for grit-blast and shot-blast surface profile comparison measurement of blast-cleaned steel. The Surface Roughness Comparator is supplied in a protective Wallet.
When steel has been blast-cleaned, the surface consists of random irregularities with peaks and valleys that are not easily characterised. Because of this random nature, it is recommended that the profile should be identified as either angular (where grit abrasives have been used) or dimpled (where shot abrasives have been used) and that they should be graded as fine, medium or coarse using the four segments on the Comparator. Fine-grade profiles equal to segment 1 and up to but excluding segment 2. Medium-grade profiles equal to segment 2 and up to but excluding segment 3. Coarse-grade profiles equal to segment 3 and up to but excluding segment 4.
TQC Comparator Disc Feature:
- High purity nickel reference plates
- Electro formed profile
- Each profile copied from a certified mild steel master
- Sturdy leather wallet to protect the test surfaces when not in use
- Available for shot- and also grit blasting
KTA Surface Profile Comparator.
Comparators for determining surface roughness by both touch and sight. Conforms to ASTM D4417. The KTA standard not only has 5 different grades of roughness but also three different versions. Its also available in Imperial units. The Keane-Tator Surface Profile Comparator assess surface profile depth (generated by abrasive blast cleaning) not only quickly and also easily with these durable 3″ reference discs.
Through the hand held illuminated magnifier on the five segments comparator reference discs for view the blast cleaned surface. Three reference discs are available; the disc selected is based on the abrasive used to prepare the steel surfaces. Reference disc choices include first for surfaces prepare with sand, secondly for surfaces prepared with steel shot and the last for surfaces blast cleaned with a grit or slag abrasive. Each disc is a high purity nickel electro-formed copy of a master disc duplicated to within +/- 50 micro inches. The standard kit includes a choice of one reference disc (choose upon ordering) in a vinyl pouch and an illuminated magnifier equipped with a magnet to hold the reference disc in place during inspections. Conforms to ASTM D4417, Method A.
Comparators allow the estimation of surface roughness by both touch and sight. Surface Profile: The proper and effective preparation of a surface prior to coating is essential. The correct roughness or profile has been generated is essential, if the profile is too low, the adhesion of the coating to the surface will be reduced. Too high and there is the danger that the profile peaks will remain uncoated – allowing rust spots to occur.
